Airborne Division
Is there a way to find information on the 303 airborne division from the Vietnam war?

My father was in the Vietnam war, but he doesn’t like to talk about it, which is completely understandable. I’ve been trying to find out more about what he and his division did oversees, but my searches having been coming up without any results. If anyone could help me, it’d be greatly appreciated.

I believe you mean the 101st Airborne Division, or the 503rd Infantry Regiment (which was assigned to both the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 101st Airborne Division). Both fought in Vietnam. I’m guessing your father served in the 503rd.

I’m actually friends with our acting Battalion historian (different unit) and actually did quite a bit of work with him on obscure references. My advice to you would be to start reading about general histories of Vietnam (i.e. Stanley Karnow’s Pulitzer Prize winner) and then scour the bibliographies. You’ll find you understand much more this way.

Also, you may want to take a vacation to Vietnam yourself. Battlefield tourism is a big deal over there (real cash-earner) and you can see for yourself what kind of place your father went through.

If you can’t find references on the 101st, 503rd, or 173rd, just email me and I’ll provide some online histories. What you should have done in the first place is restrict your searches to “Airborne Division Vietnam War” if the unit designator was tripping you up. That’s a common mistake from older wars, since many of the units from Vietnam and prior have been decommissioned (or if they’re still around, renamed and reconstituted many, many times).

Good luck in your search. I hope your father finds it in himself to talk to you about it someday.
