Do I have a Gold or Brass bullion?
So i accuired a small flat plate of metal. It has an eagle and some sort of crest underneath the eagle. Also there is German writing around the crest. On the side its marked OTTO MUENCHEN and on the back it is stamped 10.47.
What do i have and is it brass or gold or something? Thanks in advance
Gold has a very unique physical property, it’s very dense. Twice as dense as lead. Therefore an effective way to identify if something was gold or brass would be by specific gravity which you can calculated by weighing the object in air and in water, the difference in the weights would be that of the water displaced thereby providing an accurate measurement of volume. If you do not have an accurate means of measuring weight, you could use a simple scale, suspend a known sample of gold on one end and your item to be tested on the other and adjust the fulcrum of the scale till both sides balance then dip both ends of the scale into water, if the scale remains balanced then the samples have identical densities, if the scale goes out of balance then they do not have the same densities.
The principle is Archmedes principal and is the basis of the story where Archmedes runs naked through the town shouting “Eureka”.
