What does the “$50″ on the face of the Buffalo gold coin mean?
I was looking into buying a Buffalo gold coin, but I wasnt quite sure what legal tender value really means. I read some complicated explanations, but didnt quite get it. Care to simplify? Thank you!
Many coin collectors will only collect legal tender coins, i.e., coins that they could use to pay tolls or buy lunch. Thus, the buffalo gold coin is worth way more than $50 based on its gold content but you could still use it just like a $50 bill to pay your diner tab. Making it legal tender increases its appeal to numismatists.
