Cordoba is not to be missed on your Holidays to Spain
Because of its importance as the highest navigable point of the Guadalquivir River, Cordoba became a city of great importance. Founded by the Romans it’s now popular for HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN as the city has a rich historical and cultural heritage. It was the cradle of three great philosophers Seneca, Averroes and Maimonides, the Roman poet Lucan and several modern flamenco artists such as Paco Peña, Vicente Amigo and Joaquín Cortés.
The Muslims began to build a famous Mezquita here more than 1200 years ago and it was transformed into a cathedral in the 14th century. The church of towering walls is widely regarded as the heart of the old Jewish quarter. A walk through this area gives the impression of moving through history. With a little imagination it wouldn’t be hard to think of yourself back in the 10th century when Cordoba was one of the largest cities in the world. Argentiere continued to carry out their activities in the cobbled streets that are too narrow to allow cars. Once the Spanish capital, the city is now a world heritage site as declared by UNESCO in 1984.
The Alcazar was built in 1328 by Christians and is another of the city’s prizes. The gardens are particularly impressive here: although derived from the rule of Christian kings they seem at odds with the ponds and fountains of Moorish influence. The episcopal palace is situated on a site formerly occupied by the Muslim Reales Alcázares. The building has been reformed in the Baroque era and was recently approved as the Diocesan Museum. Near the museum is the Palais des Expositions which once housed the church of San Jacinto and San Sebastian Hospital. The impressive building is seen as a shining jewel among Gothic Cordoba.
The ruins of Medina Azahara are located 8 kilometres from the city. Originally built by the Caliph Abdul Rahman as a new town home, this site was once the largest city in the region. It took 10,000 workers 25 years to build it using the columns of 4,300 old buildings around the Mediterranean. Alcazar Califal rose above the administrative district with parks and gardens. The city itself has been placed on flat ground. Stories tell of the extraordinary beauty of the Golden Throne Room Lounge: rich in ebony, ivory, marble, gold and jewellery. In the middle was a bowl of mercury which is designed to reflect sunlight. Unfortunately, this monumental structure survived only 74 years before it was overthrown by Berbers and stripped of its art, much of which reappeared in the palaces of Cordoba. Medina Azahara was almost forgotten until 1910 when archaeologists began to excavate the site.
More than 2,000 years of history are held within this city. Different cultures and religions including Jews, Muslims and Christians lived together in peace there and many important philosophers, scientists and artists lived in the city over the years. This cultural context of Cordova makes it one of the most interesting destinations in Europe. Its great monuments, famous Mezquita (the mosque of the Moors) and museums are a delight to visit. In the 11th century Cordoba was the capital of the Western world. It is estimated that in the 10th century it had up to 500,000 inhabitants, making it the largest city in Europe and the world of the time.
The city has sometimes the highest temperatures in Europe, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in summer. Showers are generated by storms from the west that occur more often in December to February, as is typical of Mediterranean climates. Roads to the city are excellent but parking is sometimes difficult as in any big city. The problem is exacerbated by the nature of the old city. If your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN are further away that you need a train to visit here. High speed trains linking Madrid and Seville are available which makes it a viable tourist destination. Today, Cordoba is Spain’s tenth largest city and in the best Andalucian tradition, the city of flamenco and bullfighting. It’s certainly one of the most attractive destinations in southern Spain. It’s not just churches, palaces, monuments and museums: spend a day or two wandering the narrow streets and relax in its beautiful squares, cafés and restaurants and you will not be disappointed.
