Are the coins that are minted and put into plastic cases airtight sealed?
I have a coin in original government packaging, It came from the mint in a sealed plastic ( or is it acryic) case. I want to know if anyone knows if it’s sealed airtight or would I have to be concerned about it oxydizing or tarnishing over time. I don’t want this coin to get ruined, but taking out the the original and sending it in to get graded, I fear that it would take away any value of the coin later on…I am new at coin collecting and would appreciate any information that can be provided…I would really like to know more about coins. Thank you.
No the case is not air tight. Also the cases (slabs) from the grading services are not air tight either. You did not say what coin it was. That will determine what is best to do. If you have an air tight box or a place to store it, that is away from chemicals and has about the same temperature year round, it should be okay for a good many years. Remember things we feel are not harmful actually are to coins and other things made of metal, such as fabric softener and just the plain old newspaper. As time goes by the coin will tone, but it will take a long time. Most nice looking silver dollars out there have been dipped to get the tone off, don’t let anyone fool you on this. Nice original coins are really rare. I kind of like the nice toned ones myself. I have my coins in safes with silica gel and keep an eye on things. That way I can stop a problem before it happens.
