Sanday, Orkney – The Ultimate Scottish Getaway
Sanday is one of the beautiful islands that make up Orkney’s ‘Northern Isles’.. The island has a unique character. Sanday literally means ‘sandy’ in Norse. Sanday has some of the best beaches in Orkney. Having one of these incredible beaches entirely to yourself is a wonderfully calming experience. Our clean, clear waters contain a wealth of marine life in their impressive kelp forests. Sanday has many seal ‘haul outs’ some of which can host hundreds of grey seals. Spring and summer see thousands of birds breeding in the fields and you can easily see the chicks of curlew, lapwing and oystercatcher as skylarks soar overhead. There are seasonal migrations of waders with Orkney being in a strategic position on many migration routes. Archaeology, from prehistoric times, up to and including world war two abounds on Sanday. Quoyness boasts a chambered cairn that you can crawl into if you aren’t claustrophobic. Scar is the site of an amazing Viking boat burial discovered after a storm in the 1980s. Farms in Sanday sometimes sit on mounds which are essentially middens containing the waste of literally thousands of years of continuous habitation. The imposing remains of a Victorian ‘model’ farm can be found at Stove, complete with a huge steam engine shed and chimney. Kirks and chapels abound as do disused 19th Century schools, all teaching having long since been centralised on one excellent school. The Victorian Volunteer movement is evidenced by a postional battery, once home to a 64 pounder rifled muzzle loader and complete with magazine at Colligarth South of Otterswick Bay and a drill hall and instructor sergeant’s cottage in Lady Village – now a private home. In the aftermath of World War One, a surrendered German destroyer, the B98, parted its tow and ran aground in the Bay of Lopness – two of its boilers and turbines are visible to this day at low tide. If you are interested in World War Two heritage, you can see the remains of two radar installations at Whale Head and Lettan.
There are lots of things to do on Sanday, even if you choose not to participate in the island’s thriving social calendar. Roderick Thorne, the Sanday Ranger, runs a series of events throughout the summer covering the island’s natural and human heritage. Sanday has a complete network of well planned walks that are subtley signposted and have stiles to aid you in crossing fences. A great guide has been produced the the islands walks which is available from all of the hotels, shops and post offices on the island. Be prepared the experience the phenomenon of four seasons in a day! There are two hotels in Kettletoft together with a comprehensively stocked general store, a garage and a butcher’s shop. Lady also has a village shop as does Roadside. A Sanday B&B is a great option if you are looking for Sanday self-catering. There is a wonderful, inexpensive Orkney B and B at Backaskaill which accepts well behaved pets.
