what does the Eagle grasping the dolpin on the Istros coins mean?
I was looking at older coins and i notices back in the 4th century or so that there are alot of Istros coins with 2 heads on one side and an eagle grasping a dolphin in its claws in the other. what does that mean or signify? i cant find it anywhere online what the eagle grasping the dolphin in it’s claws mean??
This is what I found online as an explanation ……
“The obverse type (ie the two faces) has been variously interpreted as representing the Dioscuri who were the famous twins, Castor and Polydeuces , or the rising and setting sun, and/or the two branches of the river Danube. – from the book, Greek Coins and Their Values by David Sear
The sea-eagle grasping the dolphin …. nothing online but I can reasonably guess that it symbolizes the dominance of the eagle over the fish. And thus — perhaps ….Istros over another city? Istros being dominant at sea? Historians hate guessing but they like to theorize and propose … but they don’t do that without some evidence which concretely points them in that direction.
You and I may guess as we are not professionals — historians and archaeologists can not.
