where does a 4187 Early release for education get sent to?
Im putting in my 4187 for early release for education (army) and i don’t know what to put in the “to” box (box# 2). my S1 doesn’t know where to send it ether. Im stationed in Schofield brks HI, but im guessing that it will have to go higher then post commander.
If you look in AR 635-200 chapter 5 you will see who is authorized to approve or dissaprove this type of separation along with all the things you need to have covered to get an early release for education.
5–16. Early separation to further education
g. Commanders specified in paragraph 1–19 are authorized to order separation under this paragraph
So we go to Chapter 1-19 of the same reg and here is what it says regarding who can authorize an early release based on why you want out:
1–19. Authority to approve or disapprove separation
c. Commanders who are special court-martial convening authorities are authorized to approve or disapprove separation on the following chapters listed below. This authority does not include officers in the grade of major (O–4) or below, who are acting commanders:
(1) Unless otherwise provided in this regulation, chapters 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 16, and 18 when the issuance of a characterization of service under other than honorable conditions is not warranted.
So that tells us that it has to go to the First O-6 in your chain of command ( who is authorized to convene a special court martial) or your Col which is probably your Brigade Commander
So the TO should be your Bde Cdr but you need a Thru line as well that includes your commander and Bn Cdr.

Take AR 635-200 to your S-1, point out the reg, let them do the Thru and To line for you. If the reg says your first O-6 in your chain of command is authorized to approve or dissaprove, that is who you send it to. Then slap your S-1 around for a while, it is their job to know this, AR 635-200 should be like tied to their hip, it is part of their job. Anywhoo, good luck and if you aren’t within 90 days of ETS then seriously good luck with that one. Hope it works out for you though.
