Solely United States Highway With Metric Measurements On Interstate 19

The metric scale system causes confusion among numerous Americans. It even creates hostility. It seems like a foreign language to many, and some get confused by the utter lack of fractions and also the reliance on decimals. There are many tries to raise metric awareness in these United States over the years, and never with much success. There is one highway that only uses the metric system though, Arizona’s Interstate 19. It’s not much to brag about, as it only runs from Tuscon to Nogales. That said, this may become a thing of the past. Individuals want to change the signs.

Interstate 19

There are no signs notated in miles on Interstate 19, only in kilometers. The highway isn’t a terribly long stretch though. It’s only a four hour drive in total, running from Tuscon to Nogales. All road signs are in kilometers. The exit numbers are different too. Exit sign numbers are really based on distance. The distance, though, is almost always in miles. The marks are confusing people and as a result, as outlined by the New York Times, the state wants to replace or modify the signs at a cost of over $1 million. Individuals used to the road and businesses along the way could end up suffering. Resorts on that stretch of road will have to update their addresses continually to update long time customers. Also, motorists heading north from Mexico may also be confused, as Mexico uses the metric system.

Kilo and Stitch

The system of measurement used in the United States of America is one of the many cultural holdovers from England. Changes were made, naturally. That said, English measures are where the root lies. Miles and pints and pounds all came from the English system. We aren’t alone, though. According to Wikipedia, you will find two other countries that don’t use the metric scale method. However, it may not seem the best of company. Those countries are Liberia and Burma. The last person to have the idea to convert the United States to the metric scale system, or try it, was Gerald Ford.

Extremely unlikely

It’s not likely that the U.S. will change to or start utilizing the metric scale method, and sadly, those signs will likely get changed. It is, nevertheless, nevertheless mandatory that students learn it though. Scientists all use the metric scale system above all others.
