Kangaroo Rescued From The Waves By Australian Surfer
On Australia’s Gold Coast a strange but valiant life saving event took place where a passer by pulled a drowning kangaroo from the water.
Local surfer and extreme sports enthusiast Neil McCallum spotted an object out to sea that he had never seen before. It wasn’t heading in any clear direction and was being buffeted around in the swell. When he moved a little closer he realised that the struggling animal was a kangaroo, something that very rarely even enters the water. Neil thought quickly and grabbing one of his trusty surfboards out he went to see if he could help the poor creature.
When he arrived at the spot where the kangaroo was he saw that it was fatigued. It had been fighting against the waves and the current for quite some time and didn’t have much energy left. An attempt was made by Neil to bring the kangaroo on the board with him but it kept struggling and ended up falling back off again. A number of people paddling kayaks were also in the area but not close enough to help. Neil changed his tact and and with the kangaroo secure under one arm, he used the other to paddle back to land. Both made it safely to land but were in need of some rest when they got there.
Ian is the name that has been given to the little fella, an ironic homage to Ian Thorpe. Experts however still cannot explain what he was doing in the water. “Kanagroos are pretty poor swimmers” says Tim Michaels of the Queensland Nature Reserve. They very rarely even enter water above their knees he states, but maybe this one had never been taught that by its parents.
Ian has been feeding and exercising a nearby sanctuary for animals and is doing well. He will be released soon but along way from the coast where he can’t get himself into any more trouble. Neil refuses to take any praise for his actions, saying that anyone would have done the same if they had seen a helpless creature in trouble.
