Pope John Paul II supported the Solidarity Movement and democracy in Poland.
The Soviet Union was (rightly) so scared that they tried to assassinate the Pope. It is generally believed that the Soviet Union was behind Mehmet Ali Agca’s assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981. The KGB worked through the Bulgarians to “hire” Agca.
