DON’T FALL VICTIM TO CRIME – MAKE YOUR HOME SECURITY A PRIORITY

Just like a car, a home security system needs regular servicing and maintenance to ensure it operates effectively and reliably.  Yet it seems that many people are far more concerned about keeping their lawnmowers or their washing machine running optimally than they are about keeping their alarm systems in peak condition – which could mean they’re compromising their security.

Maintaining a home security system isn’t difficult nor expensive, but it’s often not give the priority treatment.

Think about this :

·       Burglar alarms decrease crime in residential areas – a finding made after a five year study by the Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice .  Other research claims that household alarms can lead to a 40% reduction in the likelihood of a burglary.

·       Problems with insurance could arise if alarm systems are shown to be poorly maintained.

Many security systems now also come with the option of smoke detectors which provide a vital early warning for potentially lethal situations where fire and smoke are involved as well as detecting carbon monoxide, which is deadly.  It’s clearly obvious that these need to be maintained optimally to avert any sort of tragedy.

Also, if alarm systems aren’t maintained properly, that could lead to frequent false alarms which are inconvenient and irritating – and can lead to a situation where no-one bothers to respond and that could also have a disastrous result.

The best thing to do is to follow the manufacturer’s advice on the maintenance schedule – and remember to keep the operating manual close at hand.

The following suggestions on maintenance of alarm systems, cctv and security cameras come from an established Perth security specialist, who recommend that systems are serviced annually:

·       Test your alarm regularly.   If your system is monitored,  inform the security supplier before testing as they will have valuable input about signal strength etc.

·       All warning devices (bells, sirens etc), cameras, detectors etc should be checked.

·       Check the back-up battery for voltage, cleanliness and corrosion.  They should have a battery life of between 8 – 12 hours, and should be replaced BEFORE they weaken.

·       Keep sensors free of dust, insects and spider webs as these can activate the alarm – and it may be wise to spray with insect killer.

·       Check that conduits, wiring and overhead components aren’t damaged in any way.

·       All equipment needs to be wel-ventilated.

·       If you have any key remotes, exterior beams or motion sensors – check that they are all operating properly, check the battery levels and replace if necessary.

If there have been many power surges or electric storms, the security systems should be checked in case any damage has been done.

A security system isn’t the only deterrent against crime.  To protect your property, family and your assets, all other crime prevention elements need to be in place including perimeter fencing, door and window locks, exterior lighting, security signage etc.
