Is my 1851 liberty head silver dollar a real coin?
It has an indian style liberty head and “The United States of America” with 2 stars at the bottom on the front, a wreath around the $1 and a repeat of the “The United States of America” on the back. It is marked 1851 date, and has no mint mark.
Sorry but what you have is a fantasy piece of some sort and probably not made of silver. The 1851 US silver dollar was 38.1 mm in diameter and weighed 26.73 grams. Liberty is seated facing right but looking over her left shoulder (looking at the coin). On the reverse is a heraldic eagle with three arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left (Again looking at the coin). It sounds like they took some elements of a $1 gold piece and tried to apply them to a silver piece. Also most times if there are stars there are at least 13, one for each of the original states.
Not “real” but interesting.
In fact if you go to Ebay you can see several listed as replicas.
