Are they going to mint a 2011 Lincoln cent for circulation this year?
Since the cost of minting the cent costs more than its worth, and with the economy in the dumps, it wouldn’t make sence. Normally, the U.S. Mint would have released a draft of the new cent by now. Searches on Google produced one artical that says they will not mint any, except for proof sets, in 2011. But the artical was written in 2009. Anyone have any reliable sources as to if they are going to mint for circulation this year?
I expect there to be 2011 cents. Congress just gave the mint through the treasury department the right to look for less expensive metals and do trials. So it looks like the cent will be around for a while but maybe in the future made of something else. The biggest thing is that as much as the average American hates the cent they do not want it to go. The reason is, all prices would be rounded up and that causes inflation or at least more profit for the companies. All other countries that have dropped smaller denominations have had prices go up. Of course their governments said that would not happen and it did. Now the nickel is actually the most expensive to make and if that goes inflation and prices will go up even more.
