Mint Proof

Kentucky Derby 2010 Is Coming Up And Mint Julep Recipe

It is that time of year again to watch the top tier of competitive horse racing, and the Kentucky Derby 2010 will be held on Saturday, May 1, starting at 6 p.m. Check out NBC for coverage. Churchill Downs marks the beginning of the Triple Crown, with Belmont Stakes and the Preakness not far off. Soon, quick cash will be bet, mint juleps drank, and fortunes won and lost.

Kentucky Derby 2010

The Kentucky Derby 2010 is the start of the Triple Crown. It would be worth getting payday loans to get to the Kentucky Derby. I do not encourage gambling, but here are the odds of the entrants from the Washington Post :

  • Lookin’ at Lucky – given 3 -1. Being given the best odds isn’t always a blessing.
  • Ice Box – 10 -1
  • Noble’s Promise – 12-1
  • Super Saver – 15-1
  • Line of David – 30 – 1
  • Stately Victor – 30 -1
  • American Lion – 30 -1
  • Dean’s Kitten – 50 – 1
  • Make Music for Me – 50 -1
  • Paddy O’Prado – 20 – 1
  • Devil May Care – 10 – 1
  • Conveyance – 12 – 1
  • Jackson Bend 15 – 1
  • Mission Impazible – 20 – 1
  • Discreetly Mine – 30 – 1
  • Awesome Act – 10 – 1
  • Dublin – 12 – 1
  • Backtalk – 50 – 1
  • Homeboykris – 50 – 1
  • Sidney’s Candy – 5 – 1

Those are the odds for the 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby 2010, but now for something a little different. (I’m not just horsing around.)

Bourbon of Proof

The official drink of the Kentucky Derby 2010 is the Mint Julep. The Mint Julep traditionally is made with Bourbon Whiskey, a whiskey distinct to Kentucky. Please, for the sake of everyone, drink responsibly, and use a designated driver. (That driver should be sober.) So without further ado:

Mint Julep Recipe

You must have:

  • Mint leaves, and a sprig of mint for garnish
  • Sugar
  • Seltzer
  • Bourbon
  • A Collins, Highball or Old Fashioned type glass
  • Ice
  • A pestle or similar implement; a wooden spoon can work

Then:

  • Layer the bottom of the glass with the mint, and add a spoon of sugar, unless you want to wait on the sugar until later
  • Grind leaves with pestle, but don’t macerate them completely
  • Add the ice, and crushed ice is preferred
  • Add between 2 and 3 fingers of bourbon
  • Pour in the seltzer
  • Garnish with mint sprig and stir
  • Enjoy!

Though I normally don’t advocate making a cocktail out of top shelf bourbons (like a good Scotch, straight or minimal rocks is best), I recommend using a good one, like Woodford Reserve (the brand the Kentucky Derby uses) or Maker’s Mark. 1792 Ridgemont Reserve is my personal favorite.
