The highest mountain in the World, Mount Everest in Nepal was named after and in honour of Sir George Everest who was a British Surveyor General.
In 1852 he found it to be the highest peak in the World during the Great Survey of India.
It was originally called Mont Everest. Prior to its official name it was known as Peak XV amongst Westerners.
The original name of Mount Everest by Tibetans was Chomolungma which translates to Goddess Mother of the World. Nepalese people call it Sagarmatha which means Goddess of the Sky.
