Carmelo Anthony Trade Eclipses All-Star Weekend Action
An All-Star Game and various skills competitions occurred over Presidents’ Day weekend, but it was a roster move that had NBA supporters most excited. The Carmelo Anthony soap opera has wrapped, and the high-scoring forward has landed with the NY Knicks after a trade involving three teams. According to ESPN and The Sporting News, the price the Knicks had to pay to land Anthony via trade can be much more than Anthony’s anticipated three-year, $65 million payroll extension.
Trading 12 players for Carmelo Anthony
The New York Knicks had to give the Denver Nuggets some major talent in order to be able to get All-Star caliber talent Anthony. Wilson Chandler, point guard Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov and Danilo Gallinari were all sent to Denver by the New York Knicks. Denver will send Carmelo Anthony, veteran point Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman. Minnesota Timberwolves had to be part of the trade as well for payroll reasons. The Knicks also got Corey Brewer from Minnesota. This was in exchange for Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry.
How is this likely to impact the Knicks?
Making the Anthony trade shows something about the Knicks. Michael Wilbon thinks that it clearly shows how desperate the team is. It could possibly be really good for Anthony, Amare Soudemire and Chauncey Billups; to all be on the team. It might be just as bad though. There is a plan though. The Knicks hope the followers could recognize the change. The New York Knicks have the chance to prove themselves with Anthony though. This will be in the Easter Conference playoff series against the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat. However, with a new CBA coming soon – which could reportedly include a hard salary cap – it might not be possible to sign New Orleans’ Chris Paul as a free agent after next season. In order to do well, the Knicks have to replace Billups as point guard though. This is because he doesn’t like the idea of Madison Square Garden games. There is probably not enough money for Paul or Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz that would be a good pick.
