You can have a total of eight Sims on a given lot. If you have Sims 2 Pets, then pets also count as Sims (e.g., four Sims and four Pets is the max on the lot, just like only eight Sims would be the max).
However, there is a small trick around this temporarily. I use it all the time.
Open the cheat box (Ctrl + alt +c ). Type in, without the quotes: “boolprop testingcheatsenabled true”
It’s the greatest cheat. If you enter it in the neighborhood, or enter it in a house and then leave the lot and come back, you will be able to toggle their needs. You simple slide their needs up or down depending on what you want – I love it. You can also do that to their skills, personality, relationships, and interest (it also works for hobby-interest if you have Freetime.) But that’s not my reason for explaining this.
Holding down shift and clicking on something brings up new commands by boolrpop. For a lot of items, all it says is “force error”. Don’t click that, I can’t think of a reason to. Anyways, with boolprop, if you hold down shift and click on a NPC, you get a whole list of options, and one of those is “make selectable”. This simply makes the Sim selectable! It works even if you already have eight sims on the lot. However, they will not move in and if you leave the lot they will not be added to the family. But I still like to control my house guests. Then you hold down shift and click on the sims and choose “make unselectable” when you are done with them.
*To turn off the cheat, enter “boolprop testingcheatsenabled false”. Some people say that having the cheat on for your entire gameplay makes the save and exit buttons unavailable, but I have never ever had that problem.
Ghosts’ colors depend on the way they died:
Old age — white ghost
Drowning — blue ghost
Fire — red ghost
Electrocution — yellow ghost
Scared to death — pink ghost
Running with Scissors (download by MaxoidMonkey) – light pink ghost
Flies — purple ghost
Satellite — orange ghost
Starvation — natural-color ghost
Illness — green ghost
Cow Plant (only in University expansion pack) — light green ghost
Melting in Sunlight (only in Nightlife expansion pack with vampires) – transparent
