Bullet cartridges and the brass they are made of?
So i usually get 2 different types of bullet cartridges (.223). Ive recognized that one shows signs of tarishing rather quickly (5 days) and the other has stayed shiny or polished for months. Now i dont care that they tarnish or are shiny because i shoot quite a bit. By my question is if it tarnishes quickly would that possibly mean that it isnt made of quality brass? Or maybe the polished cartridge isnt made from pure brass but brass and other impurities? Any answers or thoughts would greatly be appreciated. This was just something that popped in my head.
Ammo casings are made from a brass, alloy or steel coated with lacquer and there have been some made from steel with a brass or nickel coating. Some brass casings are coated with a lacquer to prevent tarnish and this is what you’re probably seeing. With no coating the brass will tarnish faster. Some coating are just from the process of loading at the factory such as case lube that’s used to prevent wear on the machinery and to prevent casing getting stuck in the loading equipment.
I reload my own ammo and because I take care of my casings and loaded ammo I never have a problem with tarnish. You see contact with certain gases, metals and the oils from a human hand can cause this chemical reaction that causes tarnish. For example if you handled a peeled lemon, orange, some cleaning solvents, fertilizer, car battery, etc with you bare hands and then handle bare brass afterwards you will spread chemicals on the brass that can cause it to tarnish. But if that brass has a protective coat of lacquer its much less likely to affect it as fast.
