Why Stamp Collecting Is A Hobby For All Generations
As children we would collect the stamps that arrived on letters in our mailbox. When I remember my own stamp collection as a child I think of happy hours sorting through piles of od stamps. A few of my friends continued to collect stamps and have amassed large collections while I still have my original stamp books from my childhood. Those kids who built model airplanes and collected other things like dolls usually lost their enthusiasm and interest when they got older. As an adult you have other interests and responsibilities, the interest wanes and people move on.
There aren't many other hobbies that are enjoyed from childhood through to old age. I find collecting postage stamps a fascinating hobby that I can spend time on when I have a little time to spare.
Most young children love pictures and postage stamps are decorated with colorful and beautiful pictures of people, animals, flowers and events from all around the world. The different countries will all change the style and look of their stamps every year or two. Stamps are usually too small to see all the detail with a naked eye but using a magnifying glass you will see much more detail included in the picture. So stamp collecting for kids can give great lessons to the budding artist in how to compose and image and display it even when it is tiny.
A small heap of inexpensive assorted stamps can provide many hours of entertainment to a curious child. Stamps are usually sorted by country or subject and can be catalogued and organized in stamp albums. On a rainy day when you can't play outside what could be better than sorting out your stamp collection and trading stamps with your friends.
The collecting of postage stamps from around the world can be fun for children. It is also a great educational experience as your child can learn more about other countries, where they are and something about their culture. The objects seen on the stamp will show what the country wants the rest of the world to know about it. The language used for the writing on the stamp and wanting to know who is pictured on it?
You can start your kids out with a pack or two of mixed stamps and a book in which to store them. It may be this fascinating hobby will interest them throughout their lifetime. It is natural for kids to be curious so when they see stamps they want to know where they came from so they learn about these places. Collecting anything helps you learn about organizing things but postage stamps also educate about countries and languages.
As your kids get older, they will probably become more selective about the stamps they want to collect. The next step might be to aquire stamps from catalogues so they will need to save money if they want to add to their collection. You may find them getting stamp catalogs delivered in the mailbox. They will probably spend hours online, browsing favorite stamp collector sites all thanks to their enthusiasm for collecting postage stamps.
The great thing about thisĀ hobby is that it can be just as entertaining for older people. If you want an active mind stamp collecting can help when you get old but it is exciting for children as well. All generations enjoy collecting postage stamps as it is a stimulating and rewarding hobby. Giving a stamp book and a few stamps to a young child may start them out on a hobby that will last into their old age.
