Real Placer

It’s Not Only For Horses Any Longer

With names like Stay Thirsty, Watch Me Go, and Pants On Fire; a good deal of the fun of the Kentucky Derby is just to listen to the monikers of the horses. Picture lounging in the grandstands and hearing the name of 2011’s first placer Animal Kingdom by a nose. Even if you just gambled away all your money, you have to laugh at that name.

There is also a lot of excitement at the pre-race party, too. It begins the last couple weeks in April, just ahead of the main show. Each year, there is a fireworks extravaganza where all can sit in the grass, your auto or along the stadium bleachers and view the beautiful display perform in the night air. The next few days are crammed with soccer, baseball and volleyball to be enjoyed by everyone, not just the sports fans. There are also many concerts all can partake in back in the grandstands. There are lots of concerts to pick from; don’t limit yourself. All sorts of music to choose from, they have jazz to rock and country to classical.

Also, there is an event which is the last to include racing riverboats; the Great Steamboat Races. Practically everything is of no cost and there is always something to do. You can go to a fancy formal or a country square dance, there is something for all. So come up and enjoy.

The best thing at the races are in the pleasure of seeing the celebrities enter the grandstands. How come? The real show has started with the caps.

The royal wedding had nothing in comparison to this year’s selection of hats. Beginning with actress and voice over whiz Jennifer Tilly, whose hat appeared like it had a boa coiled up on it, rather than the feather that was actually there. Then there was sports journalist and “Dancing with the Stars” former contestant Erin Andrews, whose hat was so enormous she looked like she had trouble keeping her head held up. Always one to make an entrance, next was Kate Gosling, star of reality TV with a deep colored feathered lamp shade that only an ostrich could love. Lastly, the reality wannabe star Aubrey O’Day, who was trying her best to look sophisticated in a way-too-busy black and lite mess on top of her head that incorporated too many bows.

At Churchill Downs it is known that you must wait until after the parade of famous people has settled in the grandstands, to start the main event. Wonder what will go on next race.
