I have a 1796 flowing hair coin. Cause its 1796 is it a replica?
I read online about it and it has all the features making it believed to be real. But all are saying the dates are till 1795 but mine is a 1796!!! Any other details please do tell.
Unless the coin has been in the family for the last 75 years or more then it is most likely a fake. The 1796 coin is called a draped bust for there is part of a drape or top of a gown around the bottom of the bust. The flowing hair type 1794-1795 had a thinner bust of Liberty and she had a bare neck. The fakes coming in from China are made by some people that are illiterate or actually have not seen the real thing. Look also for small raised dots on the coin surface or raised lines. Also the legends (words) are not well defined lines and the lettering is off for it is modern in style. The coin should weigh around 26.96 grams. Fakes usually weigh a lot more for they have little to no silver in them. See a couple of coin dealers or a coin club may be in your area and they can help.
