Find Out If You Need A New Passport To Go To the Bahamas

The Bahamas is a part of the group called Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). And as such, to travel to this country from the United States you will need a US passport book, or your passport card. Either of these two documents will suffice. However, unlike some other WHTI sites, your State-issued enhanced driver’s license is not accepted in this destination. You are not also required to apply for a visa to travel to the Bahamas.
Using a US passport card is the more convenient and cheaper option when it comes to your travel documents. The price of applying for a passport card is around half the price of a regular passport book. Keep in mind, however, that the processing time for this type of passport is still the same as a regular passport, so make sure you apply for one early.
The US passport book is more expensive than applying for a passport card. But, on a positive note, you’ll have greater flexibility when traveling using a passport book. You can use your USA passport to practically any destination that requires this, particularly those that are not part of the WHTI. Therefore, if you’re the type who travels to various destinations often, a passport book would be a practical choice.
The reason we’re saying this is that the passport card is somewhat limited in its travel use. You can only use the passport card when you’re traveling to WHTI destinations either by sea or by land. But don’t worry, as you can apply for both types of passports in order to have the best of both worlds: the convenience and affordability of passport cards, and the flexibility of passport books. What’s more, you can get a huge discount if you apply for both types of passports.
While your US passport would generally suffice for WHTI destinations, the Bahamas may also require additional documents when traveling to their territory. Because of that, it is best if you check with their US-based Embassy first about the exact travel documents required. Make sure you do this check well before you leave.
It’s normal to get really excited when you finally arrive at the Bahamas, especially if it’s your first time there. However, make sure everything’s safe first by registering at the US Embassy or Consulate that’s nearest you. They will provide you with travel and safety information when you visit them to register. On top of that, registering also facilitates your communication with them in case of an emergency.
So, do you need a U S passport to visit the Bahamas? The answer is yes of course. You have two options when it comes to which passport you should use. One is the passport card, which you can use when you’re entering the Bahamas by land or sea. Meanwhile, you will need the passport book for international air travel.
