How many lbs of grain are in a 2 lb can of coffee?
I am starting to feed my mare grain 2 times a day. I have a big 2lb coffee can and I calculated that for her body weight right now she needs 2.25lbs of grain a day. So I am going to start by giving her 1lb in the morning with hay and 1lb at night. I do not have a scale of any sort, so how can I find out how full the coffee can needs to be in order to have 1lb of grain?
I understand what you are asking, but iyla has the right answer– you’ll need to have it weighed to be sure. Different grain mixtures weigh differently, so even if I tell you what MY grain weighs, that might not be the same for you with your grain.

If it makes you feel better, horses don’t always need exactly a certain weight of grain– some eat more, some less. So over time, as long as you don’t drastically overfeed or underfeed, you should be able to adjust your grain amounts by watching your horse, instead of a scales.
