I have a 1946 penny that appears to be half copper and half silver. Does anyone know anything about this coin?
It is a wheat penny with the date 1946. I do not see a series number on it but I am not a coin collector by any means. I would like to know if this is rare and what is it worth. It is not Ferris so I am pretty sure the one side is silver and not steel.
If it was plated on the coin it looks like it was done perfectly. the original image is intact and it looks like the coin was made to be the way it is.
From 1944 thru 1946 Lincoln cents were made of used cartridge shell copper which means they were often slightly darker in appearance, but they never came from the mint with a silver color. It might be plated with some silver colored metal like nickel, steel, or silver, but that would not add to the value.
