Pristine Edisto Island
Edisto Island is located about 50 miles from Charleston, SC, and is separated from the mainland by the Edisto River. Getting to the island is made convenient by the modern and secure bridge. There is a lot to keep visitors to the island satisfied, with nature lovers preferring the untouched Edisto Beach State Park, watersports enthusiasts heading for Edisto Beach, and explorers and fisherfolk discovering the vast network of rivers, creeks and inlets.
Known for its untouched natural beauty, the island is lucky in that it has been protected by laws from the commercialization that is so common along our coastline. Due to this, Edisto Island has become a favorite for people who want to escape the noise, bustle and seediness of other places along the southeast coast. While some beach resorts in the region have a reputation for seediness and attracting the wrong sort of tourists, this destination is extremely family-friendly. On first hearing of their vacation destination, teenagers and young adults may be put off by the lack of game centers, online resources, theme parks and clubs, but others will love it especially couples looking for a romantic getaway and older folks who want to escape the rat race.

Complimenting the area’s natural history, Edisto Beach State Park is another fantastic attraction and a worthwhile destination in its own right. There are no hotels, resorts, inns or bed and breakfasts here, however; just a few simple Edisto Beach cabins and a campground. While the lodgings are sparse, you won’t want for activities as there is cycling, hiking, wildlife watching and even better swimming than Edisto Beach itself. Another seasonal attraction is the annual loggerhead turtle breeding. You can actually watch as the turtles lay their eggs! Don’t be disappointed if you miss out on this event, as there is always the hatching time when you can observe young turtles dig themselves out of the sand and head for the waves.
Apart from lively nightlife and theme parks, Edisto Island has everything for the perfect family or romantic getaway. A final word about Edisto Beach State Park; a strict no alcohol policy is rigorously enforced by rangers. Leashed pets are ok within the state park aside from at the cabins, so pet lovers will need to rough it at a campsite if they are to overnight here.
