A Brief Guide To Shenandoah National Park
Shenandoah NP includes a part of Blue Ridge Peaks in US state of Virginia. Shenandoah National Park is narrow and long with large Shenandoah valley and river on the west side and Virginia Piedmont’s rolling hills on the east.
The scenic Skyline Drive is one of the most well-known features of this park and approximately 40 percent of the land area 79,579 acres is sheltered as part of National Wilderness Preservation System and has been selected as Wilderness. Hawksbill Mountain at 4051 feet is the highest peak.
On the west side of Skyline Drive, they are from northeast to southwest, Warren, Augusta, Page and Rockingham counties, while on the east side they are Rappahannock, Albemarle, Madison and Greene counties. Shenandoah was authorized in the year 1926 and fully established in 1935.
In the creation of the park, a number of entire communities and families were required to vacate the portions of Blue Ridge Mountains and most of the families removed came from Madison County, Rappahannock County and Page County. The early private facilities at Swift Run Gap, Skyland Resort and Panorama Resort were operated only for whites.
Some of the attractions include Skyline Drive, Appalachian Trail, Old Rag Mountain and National Scenic Byway. Camping in Shenandoah National Park offers quite a lot of campgrounds and cabins, which include Big Meadows Campground, Mathews Arm Campground, Loft Mountain Campground, Dundo Group Campground and Lewis Mountain Campground.
Some of the waterfalls include Overall Run, Whiteoak Canyon, Cedar Run, Rose River, Dark Hollow Falls, Lewis Falls, South River Falls, Doyles River Falls and Jones Run Falls. The Fauna of the park includes abundance of mosses and hemlocks.
The daisies, oak, milkweed, hickory, mountain laurel, chestnut, tulip poplar, maple and many species of ferns are some of the most commonly found plants. There are a number of mammals in the park, which includes eastern cottontail rabbit, white tailed deer, gray fox, black bear, red fox, bobcat, groundhog, raccoon, opossum and skunk.
There are approximately 32 species of fish in the park including brook trout, blacknose and longnose dace and bluehead chub. There are plenty of amphibians in the park such as Spotted Salamander, Jefferson Salamander, Fowler’s Toad, American Toad, Gray Tree Frog, Northern Cricket Frog, Upland Chorus Frog, Spring Peeper, Seal Salamander, Northern Dusky Salamander, Three-lined Salamander, Northern Two-lined Salamander, Four-toed Salamander, Longtail Salamander, Red Back Salamander, Spring Salamander, Shenandoah Salamander, White-spotted Slimy Salamander, Green Frog, Bullfrog, Wood Frog, Eastern Newt and Pickerel Frog.
