Tenth Ounce
can you solve this math question?

A ping pong ball weighs one-tenth of an ounce. You need to ship a box of ping pong balls from New York City to Portland, Oregon. The shipping cost is $0.75 per quarter pound. If the empty box weighs 12 ounces and the box contains 1200 ping pong balls, how much will the shipping cost be?

Data

weight for 1 ping pong ball = 0.1 ounce
0.75 per quater-pound => shipping cost
weight for 1 empty box = 12 ounces
1 box contains 1200 ping pong balls

Solution :

1) 1200 x 0.1 ounce = 120 ounces => weight for 1200 ping pong balls.

2) 16 ounces = 1 pound
120 onces = ?

? = 120/16 = 7.5 pounds => weight for 1200 ping pong balls.

3) empty box = 12 ounces => 12/16 = 3/4 = 0.75 pound

4) total weight for shipping = (weight 1200 ping pong balls)
+ (weight of empty box)
= 7.5 pounds + 0.75 pound
= 8.25 pounds

5) If the shipping cost per quarter pound is 0.75 then this shipping cost for 1 pound will be 4 times more expensive than a quarter pound => 0.75 x 4 = $3 per pound . Finally, the total shipping cost for this box of ping pong balls will be 3$ x 8.25 pounds = $24.75 (answer)
